REVIEW – Elevator Pitch by Linwood Barclay

Elevator Pitch is a solid suspenseful story about elevator rides gone wrong in NYC. Barclay does a great job of setting the scene and making you feel safe until, suddenly, you’re not.

The story is fast paced and, honestly, a little fun. The premise is horrifying but the execution is very reminiscent of a good summer blockbuster.

I’ve never been afraid of elevators, but I might opt to take the stairs from now on.

Thank you William Morrow for providing me with a copy of this book!

REVIEW – The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff

Graff does an incredible job of providing a complete account of what happened on 9/11. Just about every perspective you could imagine from the day’s events is covered. It’s a devastating read, but it’s an essential piece of our nation’s history and the documentation of first-hand accounts is so incredibly important.

Thank you Avid Reader Press for sending me an ARC of this book.

COZY MYSTERY REVIEW – Mulberry Mischief by Sharon Farrow

Mulberry Mischief is a delightful little cozy mystery. As someone who is half Ohioan and half Michigander (and 100% a Great Lakes enthusiast), the setting couldn’t be more perfect. Oriole Point is an adorable little resort town right on Lake Michigan.

Marlee is a great main character – and I loved her group of friends! I found myself wishing The Berry Basket was a real shop, and that I could somehow join the cast of characters in this book.

The mystery kept me guessing until the end (and the last few chapters are pretty fast paced!)

Thank you Kensington Books for the free book!

REVIEW – A Deadly Deception by Tessa Harris

This one was a little lukewarm for me. It’s a slower-paced mystery, set in 1880s Whitechapel. After a dormant period of about eight months, a murder occurs and residents fear that Jack the Ripper is back.

I ended up liking two secondary characters the best (I won’t say who, major spoilers!)

The writing is good and the book does pick up speed towards the end, with some fun little reveals and twists.

Thank you to the folks at Kensington for sending me an advanced copy of this book!

COZY MYSTERY REVIEW – Wonton Terror by Vivien Chien

What an enjoyable book! Lana is a great main character – I could easily see myself being friends with her and Megan.

Even though the series is set in Cleveland, it doesn’t lose that sense of a small community that readers of cozies tend to love.

I felt like I was investigating right alongside Lana, and I did have my suspicions but it didn’t all click for me until the very end (which is great!)

This is my first Noodle Shop Mystery, but I definitely plan on going back and reading the others!

I won a copy of this book on Instagram.

COZY MYSTERY REVIEW – Death by Cafe Mocha by Alex Erickson

Death by Cafe Mocha is a cute little book – not my favorite cozy mystery but I still enjoyed it.

The coffee lovers’ convention was a fun setting and the murder mystery keeps you guessing until the very end. I haven’t read the other books in the series (yet!) but I would love to read more about Death by Coffee and get to experience the cozy town of Pine Hills!

Thank you Kensington Books for the ARC!

REVIEW – The Whisper Man by Alex North

The Whisper Man is chilling, but it’s also very sad.

A good examination of father-son relationships and forgiveness, The Whisper Man offers up a slower-burning story that picks up speed towards the end. The last chapter is probably the most impactful and terrifying.

It’s a solid thriller with some interesting twists and an overwhelming sense of dread.

Thank you Celadon for the ARC!

COZY MYSTERY REVIEW – Jealousy Filled Donuts by Ginger Bolton

This is the first book I’ve read in the Deputy Donut series, but it won’t be my last!

The characters are likable, the mystery was interesting (and the killer wasn’t obvious from the start), and the town of Fallingbrook is charming and cozy.

I want to spend a morning at Deputy Donut Cafe. I want to get ice cream from Freeze!

This book is exactly what I hoped it would be. A perfect read for cozy mystery fans!

Thank you Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC of Jealousy Filled Donuts.

REVIEW – Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center

What a delightful, heartfelt book! Katherine Center does it right – makes a story emotional without being melodramatic, romantic without being cheesy. Things You Save in a Fire is a great book about family, friendship, love and forgiveness.

I laughed. I cried. Some things made me angry (they were supposed to!)

Cassie is a badass. The rookie is adorable. The firefighters are hilarious and wonderful.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press for sending me an ARC of this book!

REVIEW – The Retreat by Sherri Smith

A weekend wellness retreat with your best friends sounds great, right? In The Retreat, it’s an absolute nightmare

A cast of unlikable characters, a summer camp setting for adults. Yoga, spa treatments, murder…

I had the villain pegged from the beginning, but it didn’t make the process of reading this book any less enjoyable. It’s gory, it’s shocking and it’s disturbing in that fun, summer slasher movie sort of way.

Overall a solid summer thriller that makes me really not want to spend a weekend “relaxing” with strangers…

Thank you to the kind folks at Forge for providing me with an ARC of this book!
